      I Komang Mula works as a labourer carting wood, and his income is about 400,000 Rupiah per month.\u00a0 His wife tends the cows of a neighbor and collects firewood\u00a0 however her income is not regular.\u00a0 Because of the very low income of the family, Ni Wayan Karniasih (the eldest daughter, aged 13, Class 1 SMP) works as a labourer on drain-building projects in her village.\u00a0 \u201cI get about 30,000 Rupiah per day and I work 3 or 4 times a month, depending on the stage of the project \u201c, she told us in Balinese.<\/p>\n

      The state of their dwelling is a cause for concern; the floor is made of earth, the walls are of woven bamboo and wood sheets, the roof is tiled.\u00a0 The kitchen and the bed are all in the same room.\u00a0 There is only one bed for all 5 members of the family.\u00a0 There is no mattress and no pillows.<\/p>\n
