Niang Korta – a poor elderly woman who has become a scavenger in the streets of Klungkung

Update on February 4th, 2021; Niang Korta is sick, can’t walk, can’t leave the house anymore because she’s senile or doesn’t remember home. She is treated by her younger sister and nephew.

Niang Korta lives in a family compound with her two younger siblings:

Sang Ayu Putu Suri; never married
Sang Putu Sura and family, i.e. children and grandchildren

Unlike her two younger siblings who each live in their own house in the compound, Niang Korta does not have a house but lives in a laneway behind the house of one of her younger siblings. The laneway has a crudely constructed roof which provides some shelter from sun and rain. The space is very small, measuring roughly 1.5 x 2 metres, and is filled with items from her scavenging activities. There is no space a mattress and she sleeps on a pile of items she has scavenged on the streets of Klungkung. In the wet season, the room would certainly leak or rain would enter. There is no electricity or lighting.

Source of income; Niang Korta works as a scavenger. “In 10 days I can sell the things I collect for 20,000 Rupiah”, she said. Fortunately, she gets a rice assistance quota from the Government every month. “If I can’t buy meat, it’s enough for me to just eat steamed rice” she said while pointing at some leftover steamed rice.
