Update on December 28th, 2017; we received an information that Nengah Kari is passed away.
Ni Nengah Kari lives alone – her husband is deceased. They had 4 children but 3 are also deceased. Their remaining daughter is married and lives in Sawan Buleleng, however she never comes to visit her mother.
Ni Nengah Kari lives in the corner of the compound of a relative where she lives in a small shelter with only enough room for a bed. The shelter is open and has no walls. She keeps the goods that she collects in front of the shelter
“I work collecting used goods. When I have collected a lot, I sell them. I can get 15,000 Rupiah a month” she said in Balinese. We asked her 3 times if that amount was and she answered the same each time: 15,000 Rupiah a month. “If I don’t get enough to buy food, then I eat whatever I can. I have never asked for food from my relatives here”, he said pointing to a family member.
