Their dwelling is in the middle of rice fields, quite a distance from the main road – about 20 minutes walk through the rice fields.
The state of the dwelling is cause for concern: the floor is compacted earth, the walls are made of panels of woven bamboo strips and the roof is corrugated fibro cement sheeting. There are two bedrooms: one for the parents and one for the children. All parts of the dwelling are in a very poor state of repair, the roof leaks and the house is very run down. There are no mattresses, no electricity and the water comes from the river or from the rice fields.
As farmers, their income is not regular but depends on the harvest. The two children at school (nos. 5 & 6) walk about 2 kilometres to school and a bicycle would help them greatly. “Their pocket money is 10,000 Rupiah per day”, she told us.
Because of their financial situation and the location of their dwelling quite far from the main road, they delivered two of their babies at home without any medical assistance. “I did it all myself”, Ketut said.
You could support this family by providing bicycles, mattresses and pillows, by giving money to them to buy their daily necessities and for pocket money for their children at school, or by providing funds for the construction of a basic dwelling.
